10 Questions to Ask Before Negotiating Your Salary

1 min readMar 22, 2025

One’s salary is directly proportionate to one’s ability to solve challenging problems in service.

  1. Is the salary I require a want or an objective measurement of my scale of service?
  2. Am I replaceable?
  3. Am I able to manage the politics that come with my salary request?
  4. Do I feel deserving of my compensation or am I willing to accept a lower amount than what I have earned?
  5. Does my salary over the long term reflect my belief in myself?
  6. Do I consider the value of healthcare as a part of my salary or is that a separate category for me?
  7. Do I perceive the initial offer to be fair to me as an individual or am I accepting of general market value compensation?
  8. Is my salary enough for me to not require a promotion in the next 5 years?
  9. Does my salary reflect my current job title or am I required to do more than I’m being compensated for?
  10. Is a change in salary adequate, or is a change in position more appropriate at this time?
