2024 has been a year of shiva for me personally. It has been a year of acceptance, a year of being, and a year of coming to terms with all its conditions regarding both personal and professional relationships. One of the most significant insights I’ve gained came in November of this year. Right before the height of the holiday season, I had the opportunity to learn valuable lessons in the art world from old friends.

New experiences with old friends teach you two things no matter the situation:

  1. People don’t change, they simply become who they’ve always been; and
  2. Not everyone ends up where they want to in life, which leads to sensitivities within any group setting.

For me, the group setting is everything, which is why hockey, next to Formula 1, is my favorite sport. No matter how great the individual, there is a group or team required not just to attain success but to maintain progress within that success.

Growing up, I remember two moments that defined my mindset around how I look at life in terms of success: Steve Smith of the Edmonton Oilers causing the puck to go into his own net during a game-defining moment, and Ayrton Senna’s fatal crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Both situations were emotionally hard to watch because they were unforced errors that could have been prevented.
