A Natural Storyteller is Usually a Great Storyteller

Storytelling is a skill set that is rare and very impressive. It not only takes above-average intelligence to possess this trait, but it takes a very creative person who knows how to take facts and bend them into fiction for entertainment value. This trait is extremely valuable when it comes to script writing, songwriting, comedy writing, and any other type of writing that needs more than just the black and white, simple truth to keep someone’s attention. Individuals get paid for this attribute because it is rare. The supply of individuals capable of not only conflating factual events to sound true but convincingly exaggerating small details to sound sincere in the fictional parts of the story to cover up any holes that may sound manufactured is limited. In entertainment, this skill is highly valued and often praised. Especially when the story is moving enough to make the true details indistinguishable from the made-up ones. Where this attribute can get muddy is when that skill set is brought into real-life events with real people. When someone is so good at telling stories that the listener cannot tell the difference between what the person is making up and what actually happened, that’s when things get weird. It can evolve into very complicated scenarios that usually lead nowhere positive.

We all must make the most important distinction between true and factual storytelling. Some storytellers have been lucky enough to have epic experiences that should be told. Some storytellers haven’t had enough experiences to be able to tell the stories they have experienced as they are, which leads them to conflate truth for entertainment value to give the perception of epicness. It is vital for all storytellers to constantly use self-analysis whenever possible, as there is nothing worse than unchecked/uninhibited storytelling and there is nothing worse in a relationship than finding out a real connection you think you have made is full of fiction.

Do you know any great storytellers?
