It’s not you; it’s me — the real reason staff aren’t working out.

Finding the right employee-job match within a business can take a lot of time and effort. It’s easy to assign blame to the pool of eligible candidates when they don’t seem to be working out. But when a business has the same problems of “incompatibility” or “ineptitude” or “culture fit” over and over, that is a signal to look inward at its internal systems. When this occurs, it’s generally a result of one or a combination of the following:

  1. Hires are not being made based on defined parameters and relative qualifications and experience.
  2. New hires are not receiving adequate training and operational guidelines.
  3. Staff are being overloaded with inappropriate responsibilities based on a top-down approach that is inconsiderate of individuality as well as process to serve adaptability and variance.

In order to expect appropriate ethics and compliance, one must provide boundaries and rules that provide relativity and nuance, as well as black-and-white structure in equal measure. This must include clear and granular expectations for the individual to have the confidence they need to grow in their mistakes/missteps and not be afraid to make them.
