Most people do not love popular music of the current era.
Most people today are simply used to the antiquated label sound which lacks authenticity and clear direction. Imperfections are what make us great as humans and, equally, make great music. Imperfection doesn’t mean wrong notes or off-pitch, but, rather, human details that lack polish and monotony. Patterns played in a monotonous way are intriguing and have character, but patterns that are mainly computerized with no human elements lack connection as well as art. In order to find what we love in art, it must reflect our imperfections as opposed to how we would like to see ourselves (which we are all guilty of). Live performance of any kind, anywhere is, in my view, an accurate measurement of an individual’s true capacity to play — not a bedroom recording filmed multiple times out of fear of judgment. I have empathy for those playing because performance is not an easy thing. Also, all of our brains (including mine) always want to present the best versions of ourselves. But that’s not reality and it’s definitely not performance. Performance is what it is. That’s what makes it all so captivating. To reintroduce this art to the world again, I developed a concept called “Live but Recorded” in high school. It gives the musician/artist an opportunity to perform their song once and only once. Whatever happens is what is displayed. This way, it sets the bar for the individuals that can rise to the occasion of immense pressure and public expectation as well as criticism.
