“Musical theory is not a musical fact.” – Steve Douglas

In fact, it is common to mistake what we believe in with what is innate. We all have an innate understanding of sound and its value. While theory is a very helpful guide, it is just that: a guide. It is not a law.

The laws that govern us all when it comes to music will always be in the key of life. Those that do not learn to stay on pitch and rooted in their natural, instinctive tonal center because of the distraction of belief will experience deep frustration beyond what is necessary. Those who, instead, stay tuned will allow what they innately know to come to fruition.

When a musician that is creative expresses themselves naturally, it is clear to the spirit of other humans. This connection is not derived from theory but rather a natural connection between people. People need sound that harmonizes the suffering we all experience in direct contrast to the endless joy of this experience called life.

Music is naturally tied to life. Therefore, a fact doesn’t need theory to be effective. It only needs theory for those who need consistent guidance on how to be effective. This is analogous to some needing college (which is a very helpful tool) to find their purpose in society both as an individual and financially. While college, spiritual guides, business education, financial advisors, derivatives, instructional YouTube videos, and musical theory are helpful theories, they are not facts. They are simply guides for those who don’t understand how to independently think. They are a road map for those lacking a clearly defined destination or a very curious mind that derives joy in understanding helpful frameworks to enhance a clear destination they know already exists internally.

What is the most helpful aspect of music theory for you?
