My Sharing the little I know with the world comes from a natural place, not a good one.

Since I was a child, whether it was in school or outside of it, sharing is a part of who I am. For example, the private Montessori school I attended was big on outdoor activities. On one of the days during recess, my close friend Billy went outside without his mittens and didn’t realize it until halfway into our playing in the snow. Without thought or even hesitation, I gave him one of my gloves. I put my hands in my one glove and showed him how to do the same because his hands started hurting. This was a very strict Catholic school that locked all the doors when everyone was outside so if anyone of us ever forgot something there was no way to get back into the school. When one of the nuns realized what I had done for my classmate, everyone was high-fiving me and the teachers were telling me that I was kind for helping my friend. Even back then, I didn’t see it any other way so I didn’t understand what was going on in terms of people giving me praise for something that I naturally would do. This was a lesson for me about who I was as a person. To this day all the individuals I’ve taken my time to share with come from that same place it was back then. It’s a natural disposition to share what I’m able to with those I’m able to. The good in it has never been thought about as my measurement of why I’m sharing is based on pragmatism and a natural sense of empathy. Getting praise from anyone in any circumstance for doing what needs to be done has always given me a sense of indifference. As I continue to share the little I know about what I know, I always know what I don’t know with confidence and certainty. Sharing in the appropriate circumstances is, to me, not a way of being but the kind of human being I choose to be every day I get the opportunity to live.
