The misguided use of intuitive business strategy and common sense in a business that lacks both.
The music business is binary by design, but its very nature requires divergent thinking. In practice, this essentially translates to one either:
A) knowing very clearly what you know and what you don’t in this business and navigating accordingly, or;
B) going in, wishing for the best, chasing the top 2%, and running on a treadmill hoping to stumble on a pot of luck.
My personal belief as to the main reason everyone wants to be either a label/label head, producer, rapper, or musician/artist is the prestige that comes along with each category. My issue/rage with the machine is predicated on what people reward and give attention to in that endeavor.
At this point, my goal in music is to redefine what people reward as prestige. My goal is to help draw a strong and clear line of distinction between an “entertainer” (which I would hail as synonymous with actors and movie stars) and a “musician/artist” that exists to create authentic and unforgettable art. A select few are both, but most fall into one category. Neither is better or worse, but they are distinct from one another.
