Understanding Schemas: The Filters That Shape Our Perception and Communication

Have you ever found yourself in a conversation where you and the other person seem to be talking about completely different things, even though you’re using the same words? This disconnect often stems from the invisible filters we call schemas.

I (like nearly everyone) have experienced challenging interpersonal interactions when it seems clear that what I’m saying is being misunderstood, yet I cannot seem to relay my meaning. Often, when such interactions take place, people will attribute the lack of understanding to judgement or ignorance. It’s my belief, however, that the largest culprits of seemingly willful misunderstanding are not rooted in racism, gender, phobias, or body judgements. Rather, I assert that the most significant barriers to shared understanding are schemas.

What Are Schemas?

Schemas are cognitive frameworks that help us organize and interpret information. They are like blueprints that help us organize and interpret information.

Schemas are preconceived notions that influence how we perceive and interpret information. They can be based on personal experiences, cultural norms, or societal expectations. When we encounter new information, our schemas kick in, filtering out what doesn’t fit our existing…
