Unfounded Confidence and Misunderstood Communication

Most people, when asked, will not self-identify as emotional. Emotion and logic are commonly viewed as two separate and opposing qualities. Because the trait of being logical is widely seen as positive, many feel more logical than they actually are and downplay their emotions instead of identifying how their emotions and logic work together.

There’s an idea that I’ve lived by, which is that one cannot respond to emotion with logic. I completely understand and agree with this overall. That’s why, in my life internally, I’ve trained myself to acknowledge but not necessarily follow feelings. But by the same token, I don’t believe one can be truly logical without accounting for emotions (because we all have them automatically and subconsciously). It’s also been my experience that one can utilize logic to achieve a more positive and consistent emotional state.

I’ve learned in my personal experience that feelings are not often logically correct. As good as some emotions feel, when they’re followed, they can equally cause unnecessary harm and distress. But emotions and logic aren’t fully separate either, in my view.

There’s another side which is that, when understood and contextualized, one can gain comfort and positive emotion as a result of logical thoughts and actions. Therefore, I choose to focus on that…
